Hammock Dunes hires Rees Jones to build second course

The ultra-private, oceanfront Hammock Dunes Club in eastern Flagler County has taken initial steps toward building a second golf course.

Located about five miles west of the present Tom Fazio-designed layout near the Florida Intracoastal Waterway, the proposed course will be designed by Rees Jones, whose list of Florida projects includes the LPGA Champions course some 20-30 miles to the south. Pending various permit approval, construction is scheduled to begin in the fall.

“This course will not look anything at all like the LPGA layout,” Jones said. “It will be more of a classic style. Although it is an island course, it has many long views of salt water marshes.”

Terry Pendleton, president of Hammock Dunes Real Estate Co. and Hammock Dunes Club, said, "We are going to have what is called an all-green course." That means Hammock Dunes West will be devoid of real estate projects.

“They’re letting me build a pure golf course,” Jones said.

The course, a few miles north of the semi-private Grand Haven Club, will be built on 700 acres of savannas, scrub oaks and palms. Although it is designed for the present Hammock Dunes membership, it will include a separate clubhouse and golf shop.

Opened in 1989, Hammock Dunes is a sprawling community of more than 2,000 acres and was included in a massive purchase of Flagler County property by International Telephone & Telegraph-CDC some 20 years ago. Technically, Hammock Dunes Club is owned by its members, who are scheduled to assume operation of the facility in 2005.

Since its opening, the community’s centerpiece has been the highly reputed Fazio course, where three holes interface with the Atlantic Ocean. The development has no involvement with the newly opened Jack Nicklaus-designed Ocean Hammock course and real estate development a few miles to the north.

While no real estate projects are planned at Hammock Dunes West, several developments and offerings are available at the main community. They include a 12-story condominium that will sell for $500,000 to $2 million each; 35 oceanfront lots priced at $750,000 or more each; and 200, 1-acre home sites overlooking the ocean or the original golf course.
