DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Polo Trace, located just east of the Florida Turnpike, has always been a potentially fine golf course. It was built 10 years ago, but because of repeated changes in management, recognition didn’t come until taken over by the Emerald Dunes Group in 1998.
It’s now accepted as one of Palm Beach County’s best, evidenced by its placing in the “Favorite 20 in Southeast Florida” by Florida Golf News readers.
Designed by Karl Litton and PGA Tour player Joey Sindelar, Polo Trace is charaterized by fairways bounded by dunes and love grass, some beautiful mounded settings for greens, and risky but appealing shots over water on par-3 holes. The variety of holes is outstanding.
Unusual for Palm Beach County, no buildings are in sight on most holes. The only hole bounded by homes is No. 10, which is the middle hole of three-consecutive par-5s. Polo Trace was a real estate development and operated out of a temporary pro shop for its first seven years. Homes are now essentially sold out.
The clubhouse, with a dining room large enough to accommodate a 150-player tournament, was built three years ago, before acquisition by the Emerald Dunes Group. It serves continental breakfast and lunch daily, and the bar ois pen until all golfers are in.
Polo Trace is one of three Golf Trust courses in Palm Beach County managed by Emerald Dunes Group. The others are Cypress Creek and Emerald Dunes.
